4 Do's and Don'ts of Self-Care

WARNING! Please do not read this blog post if you are sensitive. It is not my desire to trigger anyone but in order to tell the truth I speak frank and to the point. I have seen the deadly effects of what happens when women do not take care of themselves, sacrificing their health and well-being for others. But there is so much research that proves the best way to take care of others is actually to first take care of yourself.

I know you think you're doing the right thing by handling all your responsibilities. But when did You not become your #1 responsibility. Self-care is a divine responsibility and God wants us to take care of this temple (body) that he has given us. It requires a mindset shift, instead of putting your children and everyone else first and neglecting yourself. Instead learn to practice self-care first, lovingly pour into yourself, and then your body will reward you with more energy to care for them. You cannot expect others to love you better then You love on you. So let's get straight to it. Below are the Do’s and Don’ts of Self-Care.

#1 Don’t put off your self-care.

Instead

Do plan ahead and create a schedule.

#2 Don’t rush to practice self-care.

Instead

Do give yourself at least 1 hour even if you just want to take a 20 minute bath take extra time for yourself then needed (it's called grace).

#3 Don’t beat up on yourself if you have an easy day.

Instead

Do reward yourself immediately, weekly, monthly, or quarterly making self-care fun. Remember no one is perfect (except Jesus Christ) it's about progress not perfection.

#4 Don't try and do this self-care thing alone. Especially if you struggle to stay consistent or have struggled with loneliness or depression in the past.

Instead

Do get accountability through group, community support, or one-on-one with a mentor, personal trainer, or coach.

Bonus

#5 Don’t push past early signs of exhaustion this can lead to burnout.

Instead

Do learn to listen to your body and get adequate rest when tired. Exhaustion and burnout are not healthy and can lead to chronic illness or worse death.
